New York City's Dance Card Is Full This Year
After listening to a news report by NPR news I was interested about what they said about the dance works being shown in New York City currently. According to the news story, right now New Yorkers will not only get the chance to see classic ballets like Swan Lake but they also will get the opportunity to see more recent works by choreographers like Twyla Tharp or by Mark Morris (from Brooklyn! :). But, the part of the news story that I was most interested in was how apparently, even though there are so many young choreographers in ballet right now I was very surprised that right now out of all of the choreographers for ballet in NYC currently not a single choreographer is a women! This annoys me a lot because I know, for a fact, that in children/teen dance classes mostly all of the students are girls! Also, I think that women ballet choreographers really need to step up and show their work because even the ballet critics think that "this is a time when we need to encougarge young women to try a hand at their ballet choreography". The only thing that I find curious is that the ballet company's choose who they want to choreograph that company's works, and I was thinking that maybe some company's are favoring men over women to choreograph. Overall, I thought that this news story was really interesting and I found it aggravating how women ballet choreographers are not stepping up or not being given rightful oportunities. Anyone who is interested in this news story should totally check it out! :)
Ginger,
ReplyDeleteI checked out the news story, it's fascinating!! I love choreography and I found this story very interesting! You're right, I wonder why all the choreographers are men?! Hopefully that will change.
Your blog post was great,
